Simple Rustic Wood burning art perfect for Halloween

If you have seen our previous wood burning projects- we promise a series and this is the 3rd blog which we posted that explores creativity using our wood burning tool.

Wood Art has been a theme in our creative world.  For halloween we thought these silhouette design was perfect! This week we dug out our pantry to check out other materials we can put our creativity on. And we found these plain cork trivets that was just easy and cheap to work with.

The cork material is very rustic as it is - so we thought to enhance with a simple nature yet halloween-ish feel design.

We made a silhouette design that spans across 3 cork trivets to form a continuing design.

Wood burning art is definitely something fun to explore. Definitely a project for people who loves silhouette art and/or black and white art. The creative possibilities is definitely infinite.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Lollies

Here is our follow-up candy crafts from the Spirit of Halloween event. Our last craft to share for this Event blog. 

These lollies will be great for a birthday party craft as well and get the children learning how to singing "Itsy Bitsy Spider". You can make them as cute as you want to be.
Some variation we did where using colorful legs for the spider and making the wiggle eyes big! We had good laughs at our craft shop doing these spiders.

Let's get crafting...
Now it might be tough to find cheap fuzzy wires in Metro Manila so here is a tip we can share. Get yourself some really nice colorful yarn of your choice, then go to Ace Hardware or any hardware store and get those thin Twist Tie wires that you can use for wire tie wraps. They come in black, white and green color (you know the ones you untie when you buy a new phone and the charger cable is twist tied with this black wire?). Now, grab a crafter's favorite tool - Glue Gun! - just dab a glue on one end and start twisting the yarn with the wire, dab a glue mid way to hold the twist better and finish off at the end with another dab of glue. Cut 4 pcs of 6" length of wire and 4 pcs of 12" length of yarn per spider. 

Another tough one will be finding those tiny cute wiggle eyes. Alternately you can just grab a puncher and punch some white paper and for the black part of the eye you can just use a marker to draw it out. But if you can find those wiggle eyes we highly recommend that because it really makes these spiders really cute!

For the set of materials for this craft you will need lollipops, fuzzy wire (if not available see above how to make them), wiggle eyes, glue gun and glue stick.
Cut the fuzzy wire to about 6". You will need 4 of them per lollie. Wrap the fuzzy wire on the stick of the lollie just right at the base of the candy. Make sure the wire folds at mid way (3") of the wire. then twist the folded wire together tight in just 2 to 3 turns. Do the same for the 3 other fuzzy wire. Bunch the twisted wire all to the base of the candy. If it doesn't hold together you can dab glue using your glue gun. Arrange your spider legs to look like tarantula legs by bending them. Ones you are happy with how it looks then lets attached the wiggly eyes. Use the glue gun and dab a little bit of glue to attach the wiggly eyes.  (Adult supervision or an adult should be handling the glue gun all the time when you do this craft.)  There you go "Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout...." :)

Hopefully our mom and educator of toddlers/kids followers would get inspiration from this.

Simply Bats

This is a continuation of the crafts we did for the Spirit of Halloween. We are lagging behind on some of the craft post. Unfortunately things have been very exciting for the Oh Joy & Co team and we can't wait to share more of our wonderful craft ideas. For now we will continue to delivery what we promised - sharing how we made some crafts we did for our Spirt of Halloween Crafts. 

The team enjoyed crafting these BATs the most. They are easy to make and fun to decorate. You can get your kids to help cut out the template and you can just stick them with a masking tape on the door, walls or window. It looks awesome when you get to stick like 2 dozens of them on the wall in different sizes. It gives that feel of a bat cave! In our case we wanted it to look like it is flying in the air as the doors opened at the workshop so here is how we did it.

You will need to print out the Bat template - you can download this template for free by clicking here. To make the bats you will need any sturdy light card stock paper in black of course. It can be a construction paper / cartolina / vellum will work as well. Other basic crafting materials will be scissors, cutter or Xacto knife and nylon strings. Try to print the bat template in different sizes. We suggest 3 different sizes. For the small bats template click here. You will have to assemble and put together two half body of the bat for the big ones (click here for the big bats template) because this will not fit a bond size sheet or legal size sheet. Follow where the scoring is done to give it that real bat wing look. Cut small slits on each side of the wings - right about where the scoring is. String in your nylon string and string the other side to the other wing. You will get a wing that looks like it is getting ready to fly. Ones you have done all your bats connect them to each other and hang. Alternately you can just stick them straight to your wall.

Make your own Halloween Candles

Coming from our Spirit of Halloween Crafts event we thought of sharing how we made some of the crafts we did to decorate the event and things the kids crafted during the event. 

Of all the crafts we made this was the easiest. Candles! We have to admit, in any event candles is always a nice thing to have flickering during the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, wedding and yes - halloweeeeeeen! Isn't it great that you have those battery candle lights now. You can now light them safely indoors.

Here is our version on how we turned our ordinary white candles into our halloween candles. 
If you are a kid I suggest adult supervision. Anytime you play with fire things can get bad. 

All you need are white candles and 1 pc of red candle, a lighter and your candelabras or candle holders. Have some old newspapers ready so you don't mess up your table while you work on these candles. Now, making these you needs some patience. We need to get the candle wax melting and you need to let it dry to get that nice blood dripping effect. :) Get a really rich red colored candle so that you can get that rich red contrast effect. If you do happen to find black candles am sure it will looks awesome too.  If you are using this out door, you definitely should light them up and the white wax and red wax will all blend and mix as the candle burns the wax through.
Start by lighting up your red candle. As you see the wax melting slowly let it drip on the white candle. Just make sure you drip it on the candle and not on the wick of your white candle! You can see in the photo below we did happen to do that in 2 of our candles. :) We still had a nice effect but if you plan to light them up then that will be a problem. Continue to just let the red wax drip naturally. Layer after layer, let it drip slowly. Ones your are happy with the effect just wait for it to dry.
Now find a nice place for your candles to display and you are all set.

Howlerific Loot Bag in time for Trick of Treat

Boo! Isn't it just fun to say it! Halloween is candies, candies and more candies! I think the cutest is to see all the little kids dress up and walk around doing their Trick or Treat. This year instead of just giving out handful of candies and dropping them in their pumpkin tote or basket, why not make it Howlerific with this cute owl? bat? what is it? It will be cute to see how the kids try to figure it out what the loot bag creature really is - an owl? or a bat?


We made this craft both on felt fabric and as well as on felt paper. The fuzzy feel of that fabric just adds to that whole look and feel of this "h-owl-erific bats". Yes we are calling them h-owl-erific bats. For the felt fabric we opted to stitch the cut out to get that stuff animal feel. For the felt paper we just use our favorite tool - the hot glue. We have yet to test how the felt paper will hold if we use the needle and thread.

Just make sure you have these materials with you - scissors, card stock or any thick sturdy paper of your choice and as mention above your hot glue. Print out the template for this "h-owl-erific bats" click this link. If you do decide to use felt fabric add in your needle and thread (we use orange thread) to your list of materials.
