Paper Cake Topper

Decorating a diaper cake is as much fun as decorating a real cake. But for a baby shower we crafted a diaper cake. And every cake needs a cake topper. Even diaper cakes! We checked out some ideas for a cake topper but none fitted our concept of a fashion model cake topper. So we had to create our own. There where 3 things we wanted to achieve with this cake topper. 1) showcase detail 2) nice print and 3) that flirty skirt effect as a "fashion statement".

We started off by picking out our paper. We had to find the nice match for the 3 layers. We then started going through our pile of decorative paper punchers and picked one that we felt will work. Then we printed out the fashion model pose paper doll, you can click here to get the template together with the skirt templates.

Get your scissors and glue and we can get started. Of course you can always use other types of paper and have fun mixing & match them to fit your project. Like for a more glitz and glamour look you can use a metallic finish paper.
But, since this was for a baby shower we kept all the colors in light and pastel shades.

Ones you have assembled the whole cake topper make sure to open out each layer to get that flirty flared up skirt look.

Oh! just realized that we talked about the skirt and we didn't share how we crafted the paper doll!
Well, all you need is a thick card stock, a popsicle stick and some glue. Ones you have cut out the fashion model paper doll template, glue the paper doll back to back and had a popsicle stick sandwich in the middle of the card stock. This way if the cake was displayed for 360 degrees viewing you don't have that popsicle stick sticking out at the back. Then slowly dress the paper doll starting from the bottom layer of the skirt to the top layer.

Hope you will enjoy crafting this project. Like us on facebook or on instagram #ohjoyandco and share the love for paper crafting.
